THE BATTLE FOR NASHVILLE:
A DOCUMENTARY
On
December 15 and 16, 1864, Union and Confederate forces fought in the hills
and meadows just outside Nashville, Tennessee in the what would turn out
to be the last major battle in the Western Theater of the Civil War. In
February of 1862 Nashville was occupied by the Federal army. Now, almost
three years later, the rebels were dug in on the outskirts of town hoping
to recapture the city against what seemed insurmountable odds.
The Battle for Nashville documentary tells the story of the fall and
occupation of
the “Athens of the South,” the fateful campaign by Confederate general
John Bell Hood to change the course of the war, the soldiers of the
valiant United States Colored Troop regiments that fought and died in
record numbers, and the internal struggle by Union commander George Thomas
to overcome the threat of removal to defend the city from the Army of
Tennessee.
This
one hour documentary features hundreds of period photographs and drawings
from the State Library and Archives, the Library of Congress, the National
Archives, and several private collections. Also analysis from historians Robert Hunt, Bobby Lovett, Tennessee
State Historian Walter Durham, James Hoobler, Ross Massey, and historian
emeritus of the National Park Service,
Ed Bearss.
